LADLI VOCATIONAL
CENTRE
Ladli is a vocational training centre for
abused, orphaned and destitute children. It is located in Jaipur,
and since its inception in 2005 hundreds of tourists and several
tour groups (including Intrepid) have visited the centre. Their
response has been overwhelmingly positive.
At Ladli children learn jewellery-making, tailoring and other
skills. They also study Dance, Art and English. Ladli is a
relaxed and pleasant environment where children gain confidence
and self-esteem as well as education. For most, the alternative
to Ladli is begging, child labour or prostitution.
Visitors are driven the short distance from their hotel to Ladli,
shown around, then given the opportunity to buy some of the
jewellery and handicrafts made by the children. Sales and
donations go entirely to the children and toward funding the
project.
Ladli has an active volunteer program. Volunteers can teach and
play with the children, or help with the day-to-day running of
the centre. Jewellery and textile designers are especially
needed.
Ladli is a project of I-India (www.i-indiaonline.com), a local
non-profit NGO that receives funding from Unicef, Finland and
the Government of India.
